BATON ROUGE, LA — Southerns’ junior running back Kendric Rhymes picked up his second straight 100-yard games to help the Jaguars score the final 16 points to beat Texas Southern 23-17 in overtime Saturday evening.
Rhymes finished with 136 yards off 11 carries and two touchdowns to lead the Jaguars rushing attack. Colbey Washington led the Jags in receiving off his only catch of the day, 31 yards.
Junior kicker Joshua Griffin kicked a career long 54-yard field to tie the ball game up near the end of regulation. Griffin finished the night kicking two field goals 33-yards and 54-yards along with averaging 55.5 yards a kickoff with two touchbacks.
The Jaguars defense truly lived up to the name “Dog Day D” as they made the Texas Southern offense off balance all night long led by Derrick Williams with 13 tackles and two quarterback hurries. Graduate safety Jordan Carter gets his third interception of the season along with 12 tackles, a pass breakup and a six yard tackle for loss.Horacio Johnson adds nine tackles for the Jags.
